This is the fastest hat to make EVER. So I made two.
Pattern: Center Square from knitty.com.
Yarn: Worsted weight wool, held double. I used up some Cascade 220, some Patons Classic Merino, and some Nature Spun Worsted.
Neeldes: US 10.5, 16″ bamboo circular.
Start – Finish: Nov. 4 – Nov. 7 for the pair.
For: A pair of secret recipients.
What am I knitting next? I can’t decide, and swatching doesn’t seem to help. I’ll probably end up making more hats. Here’s what I have going.
Swatch for a Norse Sweater or SIWASH Sweater (same diff) for Jerry. The pattern is from The Opinionated Knitter, and it’s a drop should sweater. I don’t like the light blue, and if I go ahead with this I’ll use cream in place of it – closer to what is in the book. Part of the problem with this is that I don’t think I have enough yarn. That is always the problem with me.
I want to make Jerry a cabley vest, and this chunky wool was on super-sale at the yarn store. It’s Debbie Bliss Donegal Chunky Tweed. The swatch pictured is the fourth swatch I’ve made. I just can’t seem to pull all the pieces of the puzzle together, but I really want him to have a vest.
This is a bunch of wool from a sweater I got at the thrift store a long time ago. The sweater was a large men’s J.Crew raglan with a “hand knit” label. The yarn is bulky, but it’s actually just three strands held together, not spun together. This yarn screams garter stitch.
Have I told you how much I like unraveling wool sweaters from the thrift store? I really really love it. Don’t know why. Here’s two, though, that I haven’t been willing to unravel yet.
Public Service Announcement:
Go to your local thrift store today and rescue the hand knits!

I love the vintage cloth label! I don’t think I could unravel those sweaters either; they’re lovely.
Ok. WHERE are you finding these sweaters? I look and look and I do not find wool. LOTS, lots, and LOTS more cotton. Please, please, pretty please, share your secrets!
The hats turned out great!
I can’t help thinking that those two should be repurposed rather than recyled. The one with the green yoke could make a nice bag if you cut it off below the points, seam it and attach handles to the top.
Oh I wouldnt unwind those last two sweaters either, they look good. I really like your two hats, they look great. I need to knit some hats for Christmas presents too, and will have to check out the Knitty website for some inspiration.
What cute hats. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with for Jerry.
Yeah, those two would be hard to rip.
Great hats – yay for quick knits! Those sweaters are too nice to unravel. It’s interesting how much yarn you got from the J.Crew sweater.
Wow, awesome finds at the thrift store! I never find anything super nice like that… I have unwound one small banana republic sweater (wool/angora) that still needs a project, but was a great find.
these two are heirlooms. one is so similar to something i had as a child that it is almost eerie.
some people can wear thriftshop sweaters with much grace. and some like me just look like someone who put on an old sweater. unfortunately. i think you will look lovely in them.
how do you find such things? Lucke-e-e-e-e.
Those are some amazing finds! I will do my duty to the cast-away woolies soon.
Love the tweedy chunky cabley stuff, can’t wait to see how it turns out.
You must live in some sacred thrift Shangrila! (sp?)
I am with nuttnbunny, because I can’t find anything half as good around these parts. I like to winder yarn to a degree that I can not describe. Do you love unraveling like that? I totally get it.
Keep the light blue in the swatch but maybe just 2 purled rows in the middle (or somewhere) and try cream for the rest of the curly parts.
Wow. I need to get myself to a thrift shop, STAT.
Cute, cute hats!!!
I just posted the subject of my current unraveling obsession. My thrift store is filled to the brim with sweaters and I have only looked into the women’s. Most 100% wool sweaters cost between 1-2$. I am itching to go back and buy more but I have to make a dent into the pile I got last time. Some of the thrift store sweaters are fit for the 80′s and I am sad I left them behind. Colorful kids wear is always appreciated
