superbowl

When you grow up in a town like Buffalo, like I did, it is pretty likely that you grow up a football fan. I know the rules of the game and I enjoy watching it, too. I’ve been to a few games at Rich Stadium; even one for the record books. I never imagined that I’d grow up and get married to a football fan, but I did.

Gerald is a Giants fan. Every year he begins the season by proclaiming they’ll be in the Superbowl! Then the season progresses, the losses come, and the rally cry fades to there’s always next year. Not so this year. We’re going to the Superbowl, baby.

I’ve made some Giants gear in the past, three hats for my three favorite people.

going to the superbowl

Trouble is, I have never made myself a hat. So last night, after knitting my fingers to the bone watching that nerve wracking game, after the win, I decided that it was time to make myself a hat. Actually, I decided that we all need new hats. Maggie’s is a little small on her, Gerald’s too, and Jerry’s…well, I never liked his in the first place.

Let’s call it a Superbowl Challenge. Sort of like the Knitting Olympics, but without everyone else. Just me, my pile of color coordinating wool and a dream.

stash

My goal is to knit four new hats to be finished by kick-off on Superbowl Sunday.  I’ll keep you updated as time allows, and show off the hats when I finish.

I keep going back and forth wondering if this is really a challenge or not.  On one hand, they’re just hats.  With focus I could probably knit two in a day.  On the other hand, I have no patterns, I have not even knit a gauge swatch yet, and I really want them to be perfect.  I also have other responsibilities, such as mothering and laundry.

Perhaps my biggest motivator is that once I hit publish on this post, once I let you all in on my crazy plan, it would be bad luck if I didn’t finish.  And Gerald is nothing if not superstitious.

Here we go.

Hit publish.

Hit publish.

Hit…

Not that I really have ever cared about professional football, but it’s impossible not to notice here in the cheesehead state. Anyway, congrats to the winning team. I hope your coach doesn’t have frostbite on his face. He sure was looking fuschia last night.

Are they the team that played in -4 degrees. I saw that on the news here. I hope you can get them all finished for the game.

So will they just be red, white and blue? You do have two weeks- I know you can knit four hats in two weeks.

I’m afraid I can’t be too happy for ya’ll. See, I grew up and still am a Cowboys fan. And my husband is a Colts fan. *sigh*

At any rate, we’ll be cheering for the Giants on Superbowl Sunday!

I told Ken of your mission and he wants you to knit one for him too! I told him you’d tell me to knit one for him. I’ve knit three hats and all have been too big. Not much worse than a big hat….

I know you’ll get ‘em done. Go Giants!

I think all three of those hats up in the picture at top are great! You are so good with charting and designing your own colorwork. It will be fun to see what you come up with (and you’d better post a family FO shot when they’re all done)!

There was a recent poll in se CT about whether we “should” be Patriots fans or Giants fans. It was on the news. Why there wasn’t more important news to report, I don’t know. I won’t be knitting any hats, but since K has been teaching the kid to say “go Pats!” all season, I’ll just say, I hope you get those hats done!
