How to do it: Quickie Sheep
I had my knitting girlfriends over for a Christmas party on Saturday and we made a craft. Pompom Sheep! They hang on the tree! Talk about fun!
This little pompom sheep is modeled after some teeny-tiny ones my niece gave me for Christmas last year. They can be made with any size pompom, and you probably have all the other supplies you will need. Best of all, you can make one in about 20 minutes total, and that includes gathering your supplies.
Go plug in your hot glue gun and get ready for some sheepy-pompom fun!
What you’ll need:
- Pompom maker of any size. I love the Clover ones here.
- Wool yarn (of course any fiber will work, it just seems most appropriate to make a sheep out of wool).
- Small square of fabric for face. I used craft felt.
- Scissors.
- Googly eyes (optional).
- Pipe cleaners for legs. Or twigs. Or sticks from the backyard. Or paper cut into leg shapes.
- Hot glue gun.
First, make a pompom. Leave a long thread when tying off the pompom that you can use to display your sheep. Pompoms often need a haircut to even them out, and you can do that now.
Next, cut out a sheepy face from your small piece of felt. Use the picture above as a guide, or create your own sheepy face. Attach googly eyes, if desired, to the sheep face using the hot glue gun. Hang your sheep by it’s long thread to determine where the face should be placed. One you know where you want the face, attach it to the pompom using the hot glue gun.
For the legs, measure the desired length by inserting the pipe cleaner into the sheep, then cutting one piece. Since the pipe cleaners can stick pretty far into the pompom, the legs might need to be longer than you would think. Once you have one leg cut to the correct length, use that piece to cut the other three legs.
Dab a bit of hot glue on the end of one leg and push it into the pompom. Repeat for the other legs.
Wasn’t that easy? And fast? The sheep we made at the party were all so unique and full of character!
These little guys would make a great gift for a knitter, but may I suggest you take some time and make one for yourself? You deserve it. No seriously.

Too cute! If you are feeling adventurous, you might use wool fleece to make the pom poms. Instead of yarn on the pom pom maker, you wrap it with the fleece. They are extra yummy! Love your blog!
