I’ve been feeling under the weather the last few days. Not really in the mood to go anywhere, so I grabbed my camera for a walk down the hill. Basically it’s our backyard, but it’s also a big hill and that’s why we call it “down the hill”. Great for sledding, as long as you’re careful to stop yourself before hitting the chicken coop. And that assumes we get snow, which some years we don’t.
The leaves have been pretty great the past few weeks. We don’t always have spectacular autumn displays around these parts, so it’s nice to have some color this year.
Our big tree, the one that we play under and keep cool under in the summer, is a willow oak (not pictured). Quercus phellos, according to my sister the landscape architect. I love everything about the tree except that the leaves on our willow oak turn brown, and I wish they turned vibrant purple or orange or red. Nope, just brown.
I’m also not a big fan of raking all those skinny brown leaves. The bit of rain today means I can put off raking at least another day. At least that’s my excuse. Tomorrow the kids will be home from school, so I’ll have helpers. And you know how much they love raking with me. NOT.
